Why Can't I Swing Like Tiger?

By: Lisa Brown

Dear Golfer,

Most people agree that Tiger Woods is the best golfer with the best golf swing on the planet week in and week out. He is able to focus and produce excellent scores even when he’s clearly not at his best.

This begs the question: why shouldn’t golf instructors teach the average player to have a golf swing like Tiger’s?

Ben Throckmorton of Easy Golf Instruction says that to answer this question, we need to understand who the average golfer is.

The National Golf Foundation (www.NGF.org) breaks golfers into two categories. Category one is core golfers, who play at least 8 times per year. Category two is occasional golfers, who play 7 or fewer rounds per year.

In the U.S. there are 15.7 million core golfers and 14.6 occasional golfers for a total of 30.3 million golfers.

Of these players, the average score for men in the core group is 97. The average score for women in the same group is 106. (We won’t even talk about the average score for occasional players).

The average player in the core group plays roughly 37 times per year or 3 times a month.

Percentage wise, the score numbers break out like this:

Score / Percentage of Players Who Shoot It

Under 80 / 8%
80-89 / 20%
90 – 99 / 31%
100 – 119 / 30%
120 and up / 11%

The reason why golf instructors do not teach you to swing like Tiger is because he plays and practices daily.

The average golfer simply does not have the practice time necessary to hone and repeat the motion of Tiger’s golf swing to emulate it perfectly.

Now, that’s not to say Tiger doesn’t have a golf swing worth emulating, because he absolutely does.

Instead of trying to copy Tiger perfectly, you are better off learning how to do what Tiger does best: square the club to the target line at impact. This is what golf is all about.

Forget the right forearm and the left hip. Forget pushing, pulling, and rotating. Make your game as simple and repeatable as possible. Focus solely on doing what is necessary for you to square the club to the target line at impact.

To square your club to the target line at impact, the following four ingredients are a must:

  • A good grip

  • The proper set up

  • The right swing speed

  • Gaining a feel for the swing*

The first two ingredients are easy if you don’t already have them. A good pro at your club can give them to you in a few minutes.

The second two are tougher, because your mind can creep in and create errors. A common cause of errors in your golf swing is overtightness in the muscles, which happens when you tense up.

When your muscles tighten, your swing slows, you cannot connect to the feel of the swing, and your drives get shorter and shorter.

This is why it is so important to relax on the golf course. Not only do you enjoy golf more, your drives become longer and more consistent.

If you’re reading this right now and wondering how you can quickly and easily shave several strokes off your golf score, then please listen up.

I have spend several years working with and learning from many of the world’s best athletes on staying relaxed and performing their best under pressure…I then refined these ideas, tested the techniques, and put them together in one place…

If you want to dramatically improve your short game, bomb long drives, and retain your composure, then I recommend you get a copy of my ebook, “Breakthrough Golf! Lower You Score Now Using the Mental Secrets of Professional Athletes.”
