The Mental Agony of Golf

By: Lisa Brown

Dear Golfer,

The 12-foot putt on the 72nd hole of the Senior Players Championship gave Bobby Wadkins his first major title... and a sense of relief.

Wadkins needed to sink the putt to win the tournament.

54-year old Wadkins had made five straight birdies on the back nine to take the lead, but a horrendous bunker shot meant he had to sink the putt to win the tournament.

Wadkins was feeling the pressure.

After all, it was only a month ago that Phil Mickelson's double bogey on the 18th hole cost him a chance to win the 2006 U.S. Open.

"Anyone who says they aren't feeling the pressure at that stage of the game is telling a lie," said Wadkins, who shot a 4-under 68 and was 14 under for the tournament. "The tournament should have been over and I was giving it away."

Mental Toughness: The Mental Agony of Golf

Wadkins has just admitted what every good golfer knows: No matter how much mental toughness training you do, golf has pressure moments.

The key to managing these moments is making friends with them instead of dreading them.

The easiest way to make friends with pressure is to accept your mental anxiety. You say, “It's quite natural to feel a bit of performance anxiety right now. Of course I'm a little stressed.”

Then, you turn your focus toward the shot. The next shot is the focus, not your anxiety.

By making friends with pressure, and refusing to fight it, you disarm it and bring yourself back to the game.
