Rule 33-7: Distracting Other Players

By: Robert Partain

Believe it or not players can actually be disqualified from play if they repeatedly violate the golf rule against distracting other players. That's Rule 33-7, in case you're wondering.

So what qualifies as a distraction to other players and how can we avoid making these mistakes ourselves?

Well, there is the obvious one about not talking when others are preparing to hit. But did you know that it is also considered a distraction if you are digging through your golf bag, making enough noise to be heard by others, while someone is preparing to swing?

With today's technology it is also considered a distraction when cell phones or pagers go off. If players carry any of these devices, they should either turn it off or turn the sound down to as low as possible. This is especially true for those players who get a lot of calls or pages.

The fact is cell phones and pagers may be the most offensive distractions to other players because the sound can carry quite a ways, possibly distracting players who are on other holes. A cell phone that rings every few minutes would certainly fall into the "repeatedly" area of the rule and players who carry them should be aware of this.

Some distractions have nothing to do with sound.

It's considered a distraction to tee up your ball when another player is preparing to hit. It is also considered a distraction to stand too close to a player who is preparing to hit. It's also considered very dangerous!

When you are playing with others try to make sure that your shadow doesn't fall into their impact area. If there is no way to avoid it, then try to remain as still as possible while they are hitting.

For most players, knowing what distractions are is a matter of common sense. Most players, or at least those that I've known, follow the rules and are courteous of others. But there are some who either don't know the rules or simply do not follow them. If you run into one of these players, now you can inform him or her of Rule 33-7 and perhaps they will behave a little better.
