Relax on the Golf Course

By: Lisa Brown

Dear Golfer,

The most common cause of error in golf is over-tightness.

When your muscles tighten, your swing slows, you cannot connect to the feel of the swing, and your drives get shorter and shorter.

Recognizing this, the universal mantra of golf instructors is, "Relax."

It sounds easy, but often your muscles simply won't do it.

Why not?

The reason is that 'what you resist, persists'. As soon as you resist your own body's tension, it gets stronger.

Here's a technique to help you relieve muscle tension...

Right now, practice the movement you're working on: your swing or your putt. When you do so, focus your awareness on the tension.

It doesn't matter if you're sitting at your desk. Hop up now and practice the movement. (Everyone knows that golfers are...'different').

Tried it? Great! Now, rate the tension you felt on a scale of 1-10 (where 1 is jellyfish and 10 is reinforced steel). Just give it an honest rating. For now, you're just working on awareness.

Next, repeat the process, only this time instead of just focusing your attention, I want you to tighten the muscles even more. Not much -- just a point or two. (If you rated yourself a 10 the first time, simply find the strength and do it harder). Do it now.

What happened? Were you able to find the connection to the muscle and make it a little tighter? If you're really keen, do it again and this time take it all the way to a 10.

What have you just achieved? You've taken a muscle that was out of your control, and turned it into a muscle that's responding.

One more go, and this time allow the muscle to sit at a rating of one or two points below where you started. Do it now, and feel the result.

What's going on with your body? In order to relax your muscle, you're tightening it first. When a muscle is behaving with a mind of its own, agree with it.

From that point on, you have it in control, and it will follow willingly.

If you’re reading this right now and wondering how you can quickly and easily shave several strokes off your golf score, then please listen up.

I have spent several years working with and learning from many of the world’s best athletes on staying relaxed and performing their best under pressure…I then refined these ideas, tested the techniques, and put them together in one place…
