Once clouded by personal demons, professional golfer Robert Karlsson is shinning again. Karlsson is an admitted former ‘head case’ in golf. But, tired of broken clubs and tantrums, he started clearing his mind. Gradually, his golf game rose the other way. In 2006, he climbed 187 spots in the World rankings, from 217 (in 2005) to 43. The young Swede found his remedy in an old saying: What matters is not what happens, but how you react to what happens. “My only focus is on how I react to a golf shot, how I choose to react,” he says…. “It’s so much easier if you don’t care about bad shots, or good shots as well.”* The Starting Point of Reducing Pressure: the ‘Want, Not Need’ mentality To reduce pressure on yourself at golf, I suggest you adopt the ‘Want, Not Need’ mentality at golf. This means that you realize that you don’t need all the things you think you need. They are only desires. Wanting to hit the ball is only a desire. Wanting to look good in front of others is only a desire. Wanting to feel confident is only a desire. These are all wonderful things, and they are very nice. But you must learn to relate to them all as desires, not needs, because you cannot control them. If you could control your shots, you would always hit the ball perfectly. If you could control your emotions, you’d always feel confident, happy, and optimistic. When you realize you don’t need any of these things to accept yourself, you can relax. As you relax, you lose your performance anxiety and have fun. You start delivering peak performances and enjoying them. It’s a paradox: the moment you stop needing to hit the ball perfectly, the better you play. Why not test this idea by recalling your best performances? Think about the last time you were “in the zone”. I’ll bet you weren’t tense, stressed out, or worried about winning. My hunch is that you were having fun and expressing yourself, and the win took care of itself. This is the true psychology of success in sport. I'll talk to you again soon. Your friend, Lisa B.
