Hi Golfers, I love what Fred Couples has to say about consistency. He says: “The best way that both you and I can be more consistent on the golf course is to: a) use a little bit of patience, and b) realize that you can't hit every shot that stands in front of you the way you think you can. You must play within yourself.” * Whenever you become super-frustrated on the golf course, the first place to look is your expectations. Expectations are at the root of most frustration. Have you ever gone to a movie with high expectations? I’ll bet you liked it, but you weren’t overwhelmed. The opposite also applies. Have you ever gone to a movie with low expectations? Chances are you thought it was bad…but not THAT bad. Our expectations set the tone for every emotional experience. This is equally true in golf. Golf is one of those rare sports in which a beginner can make a shot that rivals the shot of a professional. A novice golfer can get lucky and sink a 50 foot putt; an amateur can hit an approach shot to within a couple feet of the hole. Playing temporarily as well as a professional would be unheard of in basketball, hockey, or football. The problem is that these ‘miracle’ shots balloon your expectations. Unconsciously, you expect to keep playing like Tiger. The problem is that you don’t have the same fundamentals, practice time, and course experience as a professional golfer. I suggest you align you expectations with your practice time and experience. Instead, play within yourself. Choose shots that are realistic; expect to miss shots from time to time; and appreciate the ones that soar. This will keep you calm and relaxed, bringing out your best at golf. Your friend, Lisa B.
