Dear Golfer, Do you ever feel like you’re “holding on by a thread” in the middle of a round? I feel your pain. I’ve been there, just like many, many other athletes. Billy Mayfair missed the cut both times in the first two major golf events of 1995. A few hours before the start of the Phoenix Open, he told his sport psychologist he was afraid he was going to embarrass himself in the tournament. Mayfair was afraid that he would never play well again… or, if he did play well for a few rounds, he’d blow his lead. Mayfair’s worst fear? He was going to play his way off the tour. Mayfair and his psychologist decided that the best strategy would be to enjoy himself and re-discover the joy of the game. He did, and indeed started to play better. As a matter of fact, he almost won. He tied with Vijay Singh and lost in a playoff. It may surprise you that pros feel this kind of intense fear in competition. Personally, I find it comforting to know that we all “lose it” from time to time. The biggest myth out there is we can CONTROL our emotions. If you’ve ever tried to control fear, disappointment, or frustration, you know how ridiculous this idea really is. (Of course, we can control our behaviour. Otherwise we’d have to say good-bye to civilization as we know it). Before you get too depressed, let me assure you that while we can’t control our emotions, there are many proven ways to MANAGE them for top performance. Mayfair’s solution—remembering your love of the game—is only one.
