Dear Golfer, Have you ever felt that no matter how hard you work at it, your mental game is never good enough? I think most golfers feel this way sometimes. It even happens to the ‘best’ of them. A few years ago I heard Jim Rome say on the radio, “yeah, Lefty, have another donut, that’ll get you a win in a major!” The “Lefty” he was referring to was Phil Mickelson. At that time Phil was known as the best golfer to have never won a major. The donut comment is about the fact that Phil was not exactly committed to fitness. Throughout all his attempts at winning a major, Phil Mickelson had to deal with many negative comments about his game. He finally won his first major in 2004 at the Masters by making an 18 foot putt on the final hole to beat Ernie Els. The win came in the 47th major tournament in which he had played. Almost instantly, all of the negative press over the years was quickly forgotten. What We Can Learn From Phil Phil’s underlying mental attitude was the optimism of champions. He never gave up thinking that he would win a major. The day he won the Masters, he told himself that THIS DAY was his day and that “something good was going to happen.” Sometimes mental toughness training is complicated, but it’s as simple as pure, unbridled optimism. Phil’s optimism recently helped him win his second major, the 2005 PGA Championship – with another dramatic finish on the final hole pushing him to victory.
