Faxon's Mental Edge

By: Lisa Brown

Dear Golfer,

Brad Faxon knows the value of waiting as part of his mental game.

One of the best putters on the Tour, Brad knows that patience has earned him success as a pro.

Last year Faxon endeared himself to the British gallery by coming over to Scotland to take his chances in a local qualifier the weekend before the British Open.

He narrowly earned one of the three spots from a 96-man field.

This year he's travelled to the British Open as an alternate. Now Brad must wait again.

He needs six players to withdraw before he can play, which is highly unlikely.

But more waiting hasn't discouraged Brad.

"If I didn't come over and my number got called, I'd kill myself," says Faxon. "Okay, I wouldn't kill myself... but I would be pretty upset."

In the meantime, Brad is reaping the benefits of patience: he is allowed to practice at Royal Liverpool.

"I get chills just coming here," says Faxon. "I feel rejuvenated. I'm hitting my 3-iron 260 yards. I never do that."

Mental Toughness Exercise

Do you lose patience and 'press' when you're not playing well?

Do you try to drive the ball further?

Select over-ambitious shots? Overpower your putts?

Write down these tendencies. The next time you're on the course and find yourself pressing, get back in control using patience.

Tell yourself that golf is eternally inconsistent, and that your game will all come together in time.

I'll talk to you again soon.

Your friend,
