Edge Long Drives

By: Lisa Brown

Dear Golfer,

Most players simply shove a wooden tee in the ground, put a ball on it, and start swinging.

Learning the art of teeing up your ball can give you a surprising edge for your long drives.

First, if you are using a big driver (460cc or so), you can disregard these tips, because the tee set up for big drivers is different.

Otherwise, here are tips to get the right tee up for hitting long drives:

In general, when using the driver, tee the ball high enough so that at least half the ball is above the top edge of the clubface.

If you tee up too low, the ball is contacted too low on the clubface, resulting in a "thin" or "topped" shot.

When you tee too high, the ball is contacted on the upper portion of the face, creating a high floater shot.

On a par three, always use a tee. Push the tee into the ground until the head is just above the ground. This will give you more solid contact, creating more backspin on your shots.

For lower trajectory on a shot, lean the tee forward (toward the target).

For a higher trajectory, lean the tee slightly backwards.

Remember: tee design has come a long way over the last few years. Using the right tee for your set of clubs is important.

If you are playing with a standard set of clubs, you can use the old favourite, the wooden tees in any pro shop.

If you are using a big driver, you need to get some longer tees in order to tee your ball up even higher for long drives.

Happy golfing,
