Dealing with Sidehill Lies

By: Lisa Brown

Dear Golfer,

Golfers often scuffle with sidehill lies---when the ball lies on the side of a hill and is either above or below where it would sit if the ground were flat. These shots, called 'sidehill lies,' make it difficult for you to hit the ball straight.

Most golfers incorrectly compensate for the low ball position and disrupt their swing. With a few minor adjustments, though, you can master this shot.

Tip 1: Stand a little closer to the ball, choke up on the club, and set your weight back on your heels. Bending from the waist too much can cause you to fall forward and lose balance. By making these adjustments, you will have a much easier time maintaining balance.

Tip 2: Keep your back at the same angle and your head level throughout the backswing. By placing your weight back on your heels you may have the tendency to fall backwards at the top of the backswing, so focus on maintaining balance as you bring your club upwards in your backswing.

Tip 3: Keep your left heel firmly planted (for a right-handed grip) and keep your chin up throughout the downswing. Stay down through impact and clear your left hip, allowing for free arm swing as you release the clubhead down the target line. Finally, aim left of the target line in case of a fade (again, for a right-handed grip).

Practice hitting a few shots from a sidehill lie at your range to get the feel of hitting the shot. Before long, you'll master the shot, building confidence in your game.

I'll talk to you again soon.

Your friend,
Lisa B.
