Curing those gut wrenching yips

By: Lisa Brown

Having the “yips” is gut wrenching.

Just ask Germany’s pro golfer Bernard Langer.

Twice afflicted by the yips in his career, Langer overcame the yips only after long battles.

Technically, the yips result from a breakdown of the left wrist, causing the right hand to dominate, and throwing your putt offline.

But the yips are also devastating mentally. A professional golfer competing in tournaments with thousands on the line can’t afford to miss too many putts.

Pretty soon he or she starts focusing on the mechanics of the shot instead of focusing on what brings out their best.

Before long, the player loses confidence in himself and his game.

How did Langer overcome the yips?

He employed the cross-handed putting grip to cure his first yip battle and the “clamp grip” to cure the second.

Why do these simple solutions work?

It's because when you try a new grip, you shift your focus from whether you're going to make the putt (the outcome) to how you can make the putt (the process).

There’s a paradox in golf: the more we try to sink the ball, the more our game deteriorates.

This is because the ball is not under our direct and immediate control. The more we try to control the ball by guiding and steering it, the more we tighten up, and the worse we play.

Focusing on an outcome such as making par is problematic because the goal is not under your immediate control. When you are focused on something you cannot control, the first emotion you will have is anxiety. Anxiety, or over-tightening, is the most common cause of error in all sports.

Improving your golf game can be as simple as concentrating on keeping your eye on the ball until your club makes contact with it, visualizing the flight path of your shot with clarity, or training your eyes on a small, specific target for at least a second prior to taking your shot.

These goals are under your direct and immediate control. They keep you relaxed, loose, and in the present. These are the types of focus that will bring out your best.

If you want to dramatically improve your short game, bomb long drives, and
remain confident and relaxed on the course, then I recommend a copy of my Ebook, "Breakthrough Golf! Lower Your Score Now Using the Mental Secrets of Professional Athletes."

It will take you step-by-step from where you are to where you want to be on the course. I guarantee it.

In fact, you can check out the book at my risk.
You have nothing to lose.
