Couples technique for mastering pitch shots

By: Lisa Brown

Hi Golfers,

Fred Couples is one of the best players on the PGA tour, bar none.

Winner of more than 20 professional tournaments, he also makes some of the best pitch shots on the PGA Tour, despite having back problems.

Of course, Fred didn’t always pitch the ball so well. Like most professional golfers, he worked on conquering this part of his game to play professionally.

The secret to Fred’s success, beyond the basics of pitching, is simple:

Key #1: Keep a steady swing pace.
The consistent rhythm of Couples’ swing is immediately obvious. It stays the same for every pitch he plays.

Key #2: To vary the distance of a shot, don’t change the pace of the swing, just its length. Couples determines the spot where he wants the ball to land and changes his swing length accordingly. Once he’s done that, he takes a couple of practice swings and visualizes hitting that spot exactly.

When practicing pitch shots, alter the length of your swing to the intended distance; keep the same rhythm for each shot; and visualize a successful shot.

This technique works for Fred. It can work for you, too.

I hope this helps.

Your friend,
Lisa B.
