Dear Golfer, I'm always looking for mental game tips that will help you lower your golf score quickly and easily. Here are two new ones... You can pretty much guarantee that in every golf round, you will be faced with a long putt. A long putt is any putt over 10 feet from the cup. Even the pros get anxious when they have to putt from this distance or beyond. There is good reason for our anxiety at this distance-- it's because we often miss the cup! Worse, we create a situation where the next putt is more difficult than the first. Tip #1: The Need for Speed On a long putt, the key factor is speed. If you hit the ball too hard, it will roll right past the cup, especially if the green has any down slope on the far side of the cup. If you hit it too light, the ball will die before it gets close to the hole. In this case, you didn't even give yourself the chance to sink the ball (it's pure physics--the ball has to at least reach the hole in order to fall into it). To improve your speed, get on the practice green and putt a handful of balls to the farthest edge of the green. Try to putt as close to the fringe as possible without actually getting "on" the fringe. The purpose of this exercise is to help you master the speed of your putts. By hitting to the fringe instead of the cup, you're focusing only on speed. There is no cup to distract you. Tip #2: The 5 Foot Mental Toughness Exercise Here, you're going to play a little trick on your mind. Tell yourself, and believe it, that you don't care if you sink the ball on your next long putt. All you want to do is get within 5 feet of the hole, and you'll putt out from there. Again: forget the hole, just try to get within a five foot radius of the cup. Still aim for the cup, of course. You still want this miracle putt to sink, but release the mental pressure from yourself. If it sinks, great! But if it stops within your five foot radius, well, that's fine too.
