The strategy "When it's breezy, swing easy" is simple, but tough to follow. Here are the mental steps you can use to overcome the temptation to swing harder when it's windy. When you notice it's windy and try to swing harder, it throws your swing off because you are trying to control your body. The moment you try to control your body, you become tense. Your muscles tighten up, leading to the most common physical cause of error in golf: over-tightness. This is the paradox of golf. The more you try to control your swing, the more out of control it gets. Recall the last time you were hitting the ball smoothly. I'll bet you were relaxed. It is self-trust, not constantly correcting yourself, that will bring out your best. How to Swing Easy in the Wind The following golf strategy will allow you to bring your club down at exactly the right speed without directly trying to control it. After each swing, give yourself a number between 1 and 10 according to how fast you thought your downswing is. A '1' means that your swing is very slow. A '10' means it is very fast. When I tried this, I noticed right away that my best shots happened when my downswing speed was a 7. In the wind, my best shots occurred with my downswing speed between 5 and 6. However, as soon as I stopped rating myself, I would unconsciously speed up my downswing to a 9, and my shots would deteriorate. At this point, my golf partner would help me re-focus. She'd ask, "What number would you give that swing?" making me realize that I had tried to swing harder. When using this strategy, don't TRY to speed up or slow your downswing. Trying will tempt you to focus on mechanics and disrupt your rhythm. Simply give yourself a number again, and you will naturally self-correct the problem. I'll talk to you again soon.
